IPv6 exists because IPv4 ran out. The global pool of unallocated IPv4 addresses was exhausted on 3 February 2011, when the last blocks were handed to the regional registries (Number Resource Organization, 2011). Public vs private: why does my whole house share one IP?
Because your devices use private addresses inside your network and share a single public one outside it. Certain ranges are reserved for private use and are never routed on the public internet: 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16, the last of which is why your router hands out addresses like 192.168.1.5 (RFC 1918). What an IP does not reveal, on its own, is your name, your exact home address, your identity, or what you browse. As the Electronic Frontier Foundation puts it, an IP "doesn't necessarily reveal your identity," though it "can be combined with other pieces of information to identify you," and linking an address to a subscriber usually requires the provider records (EFF).

Can you change or hide your IP?
Yes. Because most home IPs are dynamic, simply reconnecting can change yours over time. To deliberately mask it, a VPN routes your traffic through its own server, so websites see the VPN server's address instead of yours.
