You are probably less of an AI expert than you feel, and so is nearly everyone else. When a tool answers instantly and fluently, that ease gets mistaken for understanding. Real AI literacy is not how comfortable you are with ChatGPT. It is whether you know how it works, when to trust it, and when it is quietly wrong.
The evidence is uncomfortable. When researchers at Aalto University asked around 500 people to solve reasoning problems with ChatGPT, almost everyone overestimated how well they had done, and the people who rated themselves as most AI-literate were the most overconfident of all (Aalto University, 2025). In a separate 2026 survey of 1,500 workers, 63% admitted exaggerating their AI skills to look more capable, rising to 80% among Gen Z, while only 34% could confidently perform every AI skill they claimed (GCheck, 2026). Most people sense they are bluffing. Few have ever checked.
Why do most people overrate their AI knowledge?
The short answer is that AI removes the friction that normally tells you when you are struggling. Type a question, get a polished paragraph back, and your brain reads the smooth result as proof you understood the problem. In the Aalto experiments, most people prompted ChatGPT only once per question rather than probing or checking it, so they never hit the moment of feedback that exposes a shaky grasp. The classic pattern where novices know the least about their own limits did not just hold, it reversed: the more AI-literate people believed they were, the more they overestimated.
Self-rating, in other words, is close to useless as a measure of skill. A study presented at the 2026 Learning Analytics and Knowledge conference compared what people said about their AI literacy with how they scored on an objective test and found only a weak link between the two, with a clear group who rated themselves high and performed lower (Zhang et al., LAK26, 2026). The takeaway is simple. If you want to know how good you are at AI, feeling confident is not the answer. Being tested is.
What does AI literacy actually mean?
AI literacy is broader than knowing how to prompt a chatbot. UNESCO defines it across four dimensions: a human-centered mindset, the ethics of AI, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design, each progressing from understanding to applying to creating (UNESCO, 2024). Put plainly, being AI-literate means you can use AI well, judge what it gives you, and understand enough about how it works to know where it fails. Comfort with everyday use is common. The gaps almost always sit in domains three and four: understanding how the model really works, and evaluating whether to believe it. Those are the domains that separate a confident user from a capable one.
Why doesn’t confidence equal competence?
Because nothing forces the two to line up. You can use AI every day, feel completely at home with it, and still hold a flawed mental model and weak verification habits. The 2026 GCheck survey put numbers on the bluff: 63% of workers admit exaggerating their AI skills, only 34% can confidently do everything they claim, and 64% say their employer has never once checked (GCheck, 2026). The gap between claimed and real skill is wide, and mostly invisible.

There is a second trap hiding inside everyday use: over-trust. Large language models are trained to sound helpful and agreeable, so a wrong answer often arrives wrapped in a confident tone. Research on this sycophancy effect shows people rate self-assured, agreeable answers as higher quality and trust them more, even when they are less accurate. It shows up in real work, too. A 2026 Workday study of 3,200 employees found that nearly 40% of the time AI saves is then spent correcting, verifying, or rewriting its output (Workday, 2026). The skill that protects you is not faster prompting. It is knowing when and how to check.
Confidence is a poor guide to competence. The people most certain they understand AI are often the ones who overestimate most.
The one idea that separates beginners from experts
If there is a single concept that marks the line between feeling fluent and being fluent, it is this: a large language model is a prediction engine, not a fact database. Many people quietly picture ChatGPT as a search engine with a friendly voice, looking up stored answers. It does not work that way. As OpenAI explains, its models do not keep copies of the data they were trained on; they adjust internal patterns during training and then predict the most likely next word, one word at a time (OpenAI, 2026).
Once you see AI as predicting plausible text rather than retrieving verified facts, its quirks stop being surprising. Hallucinations, confident wrong answers, and made-up sources are not glitches in a database. They are the expected behavior of a system built to sound right, which is exactly why your judgment, not the model’s confidence, has to be the final check.
Why does AI literacy matter now?
Because it has moved from a nice-to-have to something measured in pay and hiring. PwC analysis of close to a billion job ads found that roles requiring AI skills carried a 56% wage premium, more than double the year before (PwC, 2025). Analysing 1.3 billion postings, Lightcast put the premium at 28% higher salaries, roughly $18,000 more a year, and found that more than half of the jobs asking for AI skills now sit outside IT (Lightcast, 2025).

The bar to get hired is rising at the same time. Microsoft and LinkedIn found that 66% of leaders would not hire someone without AI skills, yet only 39% of people had received any AI training at work (Microsoft and LinkedIn, 2024). The World Economic Forum expects 39% of workers’ core skills to be disrupted by 2030 (WEF, 2025). No wonder the anxiety is widespread: 90% of jobseekers say they are concerned about AI at work (Express and Harris Poll, 2026).
Since 2 February 2025, Article 4 of the EU AI Act has required organizations that use AI to ensure their staff have a sufficient level of AI literacy, and the rule covers everyday tools like ChatGPT, not just high-risk systems (EU AI Act, Article 4). Importantly, the law deliberately mandates no exam, score, or certificate. So treat this test as an honest mirror of where you stand, never as proof of compliance or a credential.
Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced: which are you?
Real AI knowledge tends to fall into three broad levels. The level is not a grade. It is a starting point that tells you what to focus on next.

Not by chasing every new tool. The fastest route is to pick one tool and one recurring task, then build a habit. Microsoft research found that the people who gain the most from AI are the ones who experiment consistently and reorganize one workflow at a time, saving more than 30 minutes a day (Microsoft and LinkedIn, 2024). Depth on a single use beats shallow familiarity with ten.
There is a quieter payoff, too. Building real understanding is what calms the anxiety. A peer-reviewed study found that higher AI literacy was associated with lower job-seeking anxiety, because understanding AI, rather than avoiding it, is what restores a sense of control (BMC Psychology, 2025). Knowing where you stand is the first step, and it costs nothing but 20 minutes.
